The Power of Ultrasound in Musculoskeletal Pain
Dr. Levon Nazarian, Jefferson Medical College (JMC)
Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia -
In 1993, Dr. Nazarian was looking for a better way to aim cortisone injections to alleviate musculoskeletal pain. “We asked ourselves whether it was the treatment that failed, or if the problem was the injection not hitting its intended target in the first place,” said Dr. Nazarian.
There was a need for certainty, he felt, especially after reviewing studies that indicated that physicians administering cortisone injections without the use of ultrasound guidance missed their targets up to 25% of the time. Dr. Nazarian states that hand-carried ultrasound, such as the TITAN® system, has made a direct impact not only on his practice but also on the practices of his colleagues in rheumatology, sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. -

Working alongside JMC sports medicine physician Dr. John McShane, Dr. Nazarian developed a technique using hand-carried ultrasound to pinpoint the source of the patient’s chronic tendon pain, such as tennis elbow. Using an ultrasound-guided needle and local anesthetic, Drs. McShane and Nazarian numb the area and break up the edges of the calcium deposit or scar tissue by pushing the needle back and forth to help induce a healing response in the affected areas.
“The mobility of the TITAN gives physicians a powerful tool to bring to the patient’s point of care and assist in treating their painful conditions. With the guidance of hand carried ultrasound, a physician can more effectively target and treat pain with methods that were previously difficult or impossible.”
